William Bradford, an early settler

William Bradford was a leader of the Pilgrims (English Puritan Separatists). He wrote a journal that was completed around 1650 and some of his stories on early settlement are posted here on this site.

He writes about a lot of issues and concerns that came along during living in the Puritan Community. He starts off with talking about the arrival; there was a lot danger of being attacked at arrival and during settlement. The Season in which they tried to settle in was the harsh and unforgiving winter season and there was a lot of uncertainty of whether their plans would go according to plan.

When they arrived, they had no houses or people to take care of them after their harsh journey; they had to make it on their own right away. Determination really came out during their arrival, the determination of creating a good life for themselves all the way on the other side of the ocean. The unknown is what made it the most difficult, the unknown water, coast and land.

The way they came through this settling in and the arrival of the big adventure is said to be came along because of the Lord.
